THE AREA
Nearby Moratalla is a municipality and town in the Region of Murcia. The population is 7,588 inhabitants (INE 2023).
It has the largest collection of Mediterranean rock art in the autonomous community, declared a World Heritage Site. Likewise, the Tamborada de Moratalla was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2018.
Its original name, according to philologist Gustavo Romera Marcos, comes from Roman times, specifically from the toponym Murata tálea (the one that is walled with sticks).
