THE AREA
History
Fuente Álamo de Murcia, known locally as (just) Fuente Álamo can trace its history back to 1520, used by nomadic shepherds and goat herders from La Mancha.
On 5 July 1700 Fuente Álamo was granted authority from King Charles II to exist as an independent township and elected its first mayor. But, because all three councils (that had a vested interest in controlling Fuente Álamo) objected to this decree of independence, King Felipe V rescinded the privilege of Fuente Álamo to exist independently in 1702.
Full independence wasn’t restored for over a century, until 1802.
In 1939 shortly before the end of the civil war, Republican forces sank the troop carrier Castillo de Olite as it was leaving the port of Cartagena. Of the 2112 people on board 1476 were killed, 342 were injured and 294 were taken prisoner.
The captured were transferred to Fuente Álamo where they were imprisoned. In 1966, in recognition of the services given by the people of the town, General Francisco Franco awarded Fuente Álamo with the title “Muy Noble y Muy Leal Villa” (Most noble and most loyal town).
Geography
A mountain chain named Sierra de Carrascoy occupies the north-west, with Sierra del Algarrobo and Sierra de Lo Alto to the south. Eastwards, we find the mountain ranges Sierra de Las Victorias, Sierra de los Gómez and Pericón hillock.
Demographics
The population of the municipality was in steady decline from 1950 until 2001 when it experienced a rapid growth with overseas buyers taking up residence in the area. The municipality currently has a population of 16,184.
Economy
Over a third of jobs surround agriculture activities, with over 69% of local land being worked as crop fields (in 2017).
Pig breeding & trading is common and, to a lesser extent, sheep herding & trading still exists.
In the tertiary sector, an economic activity which is present is the land transportation by road, specially with lorries.
