THE AREA
Guardamar is renowned for it’s maginificent beaches, it’s regular fiestas and wonderful gastronmic culture. This project is also adjacent to the town’s utterly-unique dunes & pine forest.
This forest space is 800 hectares in size and was originally a complex of mobile sand dunes , which were established through the planting of various plant species such as agaves, stone pines, palm trees, cypresses & eucalyptus.
Interestingly, the original forest was cleared to make way for Spanish navy warships in the 18th century, but the desetification of the area meant that sands from the beach encroached on the town, threatening to engulf many homes and the remainder of the orchards & forest.
In 1897, the Defense and Repopulation Project of the Guardamar Dunes was approved by Royal Order. Local engineer, Francisco Mira y Botella, conceived the replanting system which ultimately saves the whole town.
One of Guardamar’s museums (opposite the town hall) celebrates his work and shows how the town was rescued from a slow capitulation at the hands of (of all things) sand.
FIESTAS
It will come as no surprise that the coastal location has always meant that Guardamar is a celebration of seafood – with regular festivals in recogntion of the town’s favourite foodstuff.

Fine food, fireworks & fiestas!
Street parties and festivals in honour of the ancient Moors & Christians battle are well-renowned in the region and explode Guardamar into life, with firework displays and parades through the town.
