THE AREA

The history of San Juan de Alicante is closely linked to that of Alicante. Considered the sentimental and geographical heart of the fertile Huerta de Alicante, it was probably chosen as a settlement by the ancient civilizations that came to these lands.

In 2019, on the plot located at C/ Mosén Pedro Mena and C/ San José, archaeological studies determined the presence of Roman archaeological remains dating back to the 4th & 5th centuries AD, consisting of two oblong-shaped pits containing numerous ceramic objects (casserole dishes, bowls, jugs, plates, amphorae, etc.) as well as a knife, a lead fragment, and a whetstone along with the remains of a sheep and goat.

Modern day San Juan offers a wide range of cultural activities, and the Casa de la Cultura has been the meeting place for many of them since 1993. The cultural offerings are renewed monthly with theatre, film, dance, and music, making it a benchmark in the region and province of Alicante.

Among its most important annual programs is the San Juan de Alicante Film Festival , currently directed by Toni Cristóbal and organized by the San Juan de Alicante City Council and the Luis García Berlanga High School.

During the month of August, the Sant Joan d’Alacant Night of Candlelight is celebrated, a cultural event that has gained great popularity in recent years. The town is lit with thousands of candles, creating a unique atmosphere that attracts numerous visitors. The program includes live music, dance, local cuisine, and activities for the whole family, consolidating itself as one of the most important summer events in the province of Alicante.
