THE AREA
Although Alhama started its history in prehistoric times, it wasn’t until the 1st century when the natural thermal springs and baths attracted a Roman population.
However, it was the Islamic period that saw a bigger increase in population, as well as development of the town. In fact, the term Alhama comes from the Arabic Alhamma, which means “the thermal bath”.
Modern-day Alhama has a rich presence in agriculture with most crops dedicated to the cultivation of citrus fruits, almond trees, olive trees, and peppers.
Livestock farming, pigs, sheep and goats, has achieved a significant increase, (esspecially pigs) which has led to the rise of the pork-derived industry in the town.
