The current population of the town descends mainly from settlers who arrived from Monóvar from the beginning of the 18th century until the 1830s.
It belonged to the jurisdiction of Aspe until 1839, the year in which it became independent and constituted a single municipality together with Hondón de los Frailes, which in turn had been segregated from Redován.
In 1926 Hondón de las Nieves and Hondón de los Frailes separated to form independent town councils.
It has a population of 2,698 inhabitants (2023), 38% of which are non-Spanish.
